Mark Grieve: General Manager Porthpean Golf Club
I am very excited to be able to introduce myself as your General Manager at Porthpean Golf Club
I will be responsible for the day to day running of the Golf Club and your contact with regards of Porthpean Golf Club Limited.
My entire working life has been in the golf business starting as a tour player back in the early 1980’s then a self-employed Head Professional at various private member clubs, moving into management as a Director of Golf, Golf Operations, Assistant Manager, Secretary and most recently General Manager at a successful very busy proprietary golf club called Huntswood Golf Club.
Even though my role is more in management I have continued to coach and help improve golfers with their game, one of the areas we want to bring to Porthpean is an Academy where we want to bring new golfers, juniors, ladies, seniors, disability groups and schools building a pathway to increase new members to the club.
The lure of moving back to The West Country and to run Porthpean Golf Club which is set in a beautiful location with huge potential was too good to turn down.
My links to Cornwall began when I was a pupil at Truro High School and junior member at Truro Golf Club before gaining a full scholarship to Millfield School in Somerset, my wife Carole is a Bodmin girl and stepson Steven was born in Cornwall.
As I have mentioned before my playing ability was to a high level even though it was quite a few years ago! Some highlights of these are:
- Youngest UK Scratch Club Champion (13) Bigbury Golf Club
- 1981/1982 England Boy’s International
- 1982 England Boy’s Captain
- 1982 British Boy’s Champion Burnham & Berrow
- 1987 Henry Cooper PGA individual winner La Manga
- European Tour: Benson & Hedges Fulford-Lawrence Batley The Belfry and World Pro-Am Tobago
The vision is to build on the great work that Gary and his Team has created in a very friendly welcoming golf club with a very attractive golf course. I personally want to thank Gary and the staff for their help and warm welcome in the change of ownership which of course can be unsettling for the staff and members.
The 18 Hole Golf Course and The Golf Business is our priority and passion.
As soon as feasibly possible we will be meeting with the club captains and of course the members who we know are very passionate about Porthpean Golf Club and an important part of the business.
I look forward to meeting many members over the next few days where I can now introduce myself formally and answer many questions, I am sure you may have for me.
Best regards,
Mark Grieve PGA
